Arthur Levy
MASTER VOICE TEACHER & PEDAGOGUE
Arthur Levy is an internationally celebrated voice teacher, master technician, and artistic mentor whose work has shaped the careers of some of the most acclaimed singers of our time. Based in New York City, with a private studio also in Stuttgart, Germany, he has served on the voice faculties of the Manhattan School of Music, the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, and SUNY Purchase. He remains a central figure on the voice faculty at Mannes School of Music at The New School, where his tenure spans many years of distinguished teaching and mentorship.
Over the course of his career, Levy has worked with thousands of singers from around the world, guiding artists across a broad range of backgrounds, styles, and career stages. His students have appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Royal Opera House, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Berlin State Opera, and many other leading houses across Europe and the United States, as well as in major Broadway productions. This widespread success reflects his ability to cultivate both the technical foundation and the artistic individuality required for sustained excellence at the highest level of the profession.
Among the many singers he has taught and mentored directly are six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, renowned lyric tenor Charles Castronovo, acclaimed bel canto tenor Santiago Ballerini, and star dramatic tenor Younghoon Lee, all of whom count Levy as a formative and ongoing influence in their vocal development and careers.
In addition to his work with singers, Levy served as vocal consultant to Meryl Streep for her role in the 2016 film Florence Foster Jenkins, guiding her portrayal of Jenkins’s famously off-pitch singing with a performance that was both technically safe and dramatically convincing—earning widespread praise for its authenticity and nuance.
Arthur Levy is known for his holistic, artist-centered approach to vocal training, grounded in the principles of full-bodied singing in the old-school Italian tradition. He combines time-honored technique with emotional intelligence and dramatic clarity, helping singers unlock their most authentic voices while maintaining vocal health and expressive power. His legacy is reflected not only in the global success of his students, but in the depth, individuality, and integrity of the artists he continues to shape.
